A study shows that the accumulation of Aβ protein (amyloid plaque) in brain, started as early as 20 years before the appearance of symptoms of brain deterioration.

Causes of brain deterioration

The causes of brain deterioration are still unidentified but research suggests they probably include a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors (e.g. brain fatigue). In fact, two abnormal structures, namely amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (deposits of tau proteins) in the brain are prime suspects of nerve cells damage that could possibly lead to brain deterioration.

What are amyloid plaques?
Like dental plaques that form on teeth, amyloid plaques are clusters of Aβ protein deposits in the brain. In a healthy brain, the proteins would be broken down and removed from the brain naturally. However, in a deteriorating brain, the body is unable to remove these protein fragments and they accumulate to form hard and insoluble plaques between the neurons in the brain. This causes disruption to neurons communication and induces oxidative stress that affects the proper functioning of the brain.

What are neurofibrillary tangles?
Brain cells depend on an internal transport system to carry nutrients and other essential compunds throughout the extensive neural network. This system requires the normal structure protein called tau. In brain deterioration, threads of tau protein twist into abnormal tangles inside brain cells, leading to failure of the transport system and causing death of brain cells.

Brain Fatigue
Brain deterioration may also be attributed to brain fatigue. Recent studies in Japan found that one of the possible root causes of brain deterioration is “Stress-induced Brain Fatigue”. Excessive stress coupled with unhealthy lifestyle and diets, environment contaminants and lack of sleep, produce free radicals, thereby causing the nerve cells to oxidise and the brain to fall into a state of fatigue. This may lead to symptoms of brain deterioration over a prolonged period.

What are Plasmalogens?

Plasmalogens are a type of phospholipid present in almost all tissues of human, and are most abundant in the brain. They are essential for their critical role in memory, focus and other cognitive functions. Plasmalogen levels in the body begin to increase from foetal stage, peak by the 30s and start to decline thereafter. Research indicated that this decline affects brain performance, especially in plasmalogen-deficient seniors.

Breakthrough in Plasmalogen Research

The strong correlation between plasmalogens and brain deterioration had already been confirmed decades ago. However, these studies had made very little progress. The main reason for the slow progression was due to extraordinary amount of time and money required for plasmalogen extraction and detection. In addition, there was no high-volume extraction technology available to extract large amount of plasmalogen for animal testing and clinical trial. However, a research team led by Emeritus Professor, Takehiko Fujino of Kyushu University in Japan has successfully established a simple plasmalogen detection method and developed a patented plasmalogen extraction method to extract large volumes of high purity (92%) plasmalogens. These discoveries have led to a major breakthrough in plasmalogen research.

Plasmalogen and Brain Functions

Studies have also shown that plasmalogen levels are significantly reduced in the brain tissue and serum of patients with brain deterioration. The decline of plasmalogen is associated with the severity of cognitive impairment.

Sources of plasmalogen

Plasmalogens are available from many sources of food. However, studies have proven that the structure of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN is closest to that of the plasmalogens found in the human body. In addition, plasmalogen from scallop is found to have better and quicker effects than chicken-derived plasmalogens in the improvement of cognitive function.

What is Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN?
Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN is an ingredient extracted from scallop. This ingredient is supported by clinical trial for its effectiveness in supporting and maintaining healthy cognitive function, emotions and behaviours in patients with brain deterioration. Extensive research have demonstrated that plasmalogens are important for brain health support — protecting brain cells against oxidation, suppressing the formation of amyloid plaques and neuroinflammation (which are responsible for cognitive decline), promoting neurogenesis (birth of nerve cells), inhibiting neuronal cell death and improving learning and memory function.

What is NeuroREGAIN?
NeuroREGAIN is formulated with Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN extracted from scallop using a patented extraction technology developed by Dr Takehiko Fujino and his team. Harnessing the benefits of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN, it is a natural fomula to support brain and memory functions.

What health benefits can I expect from Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN?
Clinical trials of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN have shown its efficacy in supporting cognitive, emotion, behaviour and the quality of life of patients with brain deterioration, the health benefits of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN may vary from person to person. As brain deterioration may due to many possible causes, some people may observe positive changes while other may not.

Does oral intake of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN have any effect on plasmalogen levels in the human body?
Yes, plasmalogen levels in blood do increase after consumption of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN. In general, the level of plasmalogens in the blood is correlated to the cognitive function of the brain.

How long does it take to see the benefits of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN on my health?
The ideal duration for optimum effect of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN on patient with brain deterioration has not yet been studied in any clinical trial. However, positive changes have been observed in certain patients within a short period of one month after administration. Continuous supplementation of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN is strongly recommended to maintain signicantly high plasmalogen levels in the body. It is important to note that the intake duration by any person should be determined by their physician, with consideration of the effects and changes in that person.

Can I consume plenty of scallops in place of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN to achieve the same level of effect on cognitive function?
Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN extracted with special technique can be absorbed efficiently into our body. It is not possible to achieve the same absorption efficiency with consumption of plenty of scallops.

Are there any known side effects of consuming NeuroREGAIN Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN?
There are no known side effects associated with daily consumption of Scallop-derived PLASMALOGEN in NeuroREGAIN if taken as recommended, except if one is allergic to scallop or soybean.
